Victoria University students are invited to apply for the 2020 New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship Program – the ultimate opportunity to live, work and study in the Indo-Pacific region.

The NCP Scholarship Program is supported by the Australian Government and provides undergraduate students with funding for a semester of study, internship or mentorship in one of 40 Indo-Pacific locations.

VU community development graduate Mia Dunphy was VU's first recipient of the prestigious scholarship in 2017, undertaking studies and internships in Indonesia and Fiji.

For five months, she studied at Indonesia's Universitas Gadjah Mada and worked as an intern at the Centre for Asia and Pacific Studies and the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association.

Mia said she grew personally and professionally, and learned the Bahasa language.

“Learning the language was absolutely and utterly the most challenging and rewarding part of my program, as it meant I could engage and chat with local people,” she said.

Mia also spent a month as a research assistant in Fiji, living in a rural village and staying with a family while assisting the Nadroumai Women’s Group Nursery with their tree and seedlings program.

“It was challenging and rewarding. As I was the only foreigner there; I struggled with the change of culture and the heat, but the women became like my family.”

Mia encourages other VU students to apply for the life-changing NCP Scholarship Program.

“The friendships, both personal and professional, will guide you through your life, and you will always have a special connection to the place you lived.”

This year, Bachelor of Laws student Laurence Fudim will go to Japan, and Bachelor of Community Development student Audrey Dalton-Power will head to Fiji with the support of the NCP Scholarship Program.

Interested students can lodge an expression of interest by sending a CV and a link of a two-minute video to explain where and why they would like to study on the scholarship to [email protected] by Friday 3 May.
