Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design, apply and remove standard make-up for performers and talent appearing in screen and entertainment industry productions. It involves designing make-up plans, preparing work areas, and applying and removing make-up according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who use their creative skills, working alone or as part of a team, to design and apply make-up that meets production requirements in consideration of corrective make-up principles.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
*design, apply and remove make-up according to at least two different brief requirements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:
*generate make-up design ideas that consider production and performer requirements
*incorporate colour design principles into make-up designs
*create make-up plans that take account of the condition of performers’ skin and other special requirements of performers or talent
*follow health, hygiene and safety procedures
*apply make-up products and perfect application technique
*communicate with required personnel according to production requirements.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
*production requirements including:

timelines and production schedules
creative solutions to commonly encountered problems
products required for types of make-up applications
hair and clothes protection
specific performer requirements
*specific performer requirements including:
comfort during production
hazard protection
*roles and responsibilities of personnel in the screen and entertainment industries who need to be consulted in relation to make-up issues
*effects of natural and artificial lighting on make-up
*relationship of colour design principles to make-up
*common make-up products used in screen and entertainment industry productions
*ways and explanation for skin reacting to make-up products commonly used in screen and entertainment industry productions
*common cleaning standards for make-up work areas
*effects created by different make-up products and colour application techniques
*work health and safety (WHS) procedures that apply to providing make-up services.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.
