Turn your passion for supporting young people into a career with a Diploma of Youth Work CHC50425 at Victoria University (VU).

By studying our youth-work diploma, you will gain the skills needed to build trusting, effective relationships with young people. You’ll explore the many aspects of youth work, discovering new ways to create engaging, fun and transformative programs for kids, teens and young adults.

You'll develop broad knowledge and skills in:

  • needs assessment, service delivery and case management
  • advocacy and empowerment for young people
  • child protection, legal and ethical frameworks
  • community education and group activities
  • communication and workplace safety.

During the course, you'll undertake a placement, putting your learning into practice with the support of a qualified workplace supervisor. 

With your knowledge of social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs combined with hands-on experience, you'll graduate ready to support young people with the issues they face.

Course structure

To be awarded the CHC50425 Diploma of Youth Work, 21 units must be completed, consisting of: • 16 core units • 5 elective units, consisting of: - at least 1 unit from Group A from CHC50425 Diploma of Youth Work - plus at least 2 units from Group A or Group B from CHC50425 Diploma of Youth Work - up to 2 units from the electives listed from CHC50425 Diploma of Youth Work, or any endorsed Training Package or accredited course.All electives chosen must contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

Classes & homework

You will be required to attend scheduled classes 3-4 days per week. Approximate class times: 9.30am–3.30pm 

You are required to complete independent study including eLearning activities and assessments. We recommend dedicating up to 15 hours per week for this.

You will be prepared for roles with some level of supervision and/or coordination responsibility. You could find employment in community, government or youth sector agencies in a range of areas such as:

  • psycho-social support services (including residential, day program and outreach)
  • recreational programs
  • juvenile justice
  • housing
  • schools.

Potential job titles include:

  • case manager
  • residential care worker

  • peer support worker/carer.
