The Library supports the University's commitment to equity and diversity by providing consistent, basic support services. We work closely with VU’s Accessibility Services to supply library services and resources that are needed by students with a disability.

Services we provide

The Library can provide various accessibility services to students, including:

  • help to retrieve items from shelves
  • searching the library catalogue
  • database and web navigation
  • one-on-one library orientation sessions to help you find your way around
  • assistance with complex photocopying or scanning (enlargements)
  • extended loans on selected items
  • emailing or postage of materials when appropriate
  • getting resources in alternative formats
  • equipment hire, such as keyboards, software and laptops.

To arrange equipment hire contact an Accessibility Library Services Officer. They will fill in an Equipment Loan form for you.

Adaptive equipment

We have a range of adaptive equipment and facilities including:

  • accessible work stations
  • zoom text and screen magnification software
  • digital voice recorders
  • Read&Write Gold software on all Library PCs
  • Livescribe pens
  • private study/discussion rooms - Adaptive Technology rooms are available at St Albans and Footscray Park Learning Commons.

Please check with your campus library as equipment is not available at all campuses.

We can assist you in the use of the library and basic equipment, however we anticipate that if you require more specialised adaptive equipment that you know how to use it.

Adaptive technology labs

Our Adaptive technology labs, located within the Library at Footscray Park and St Albans, enables you to access the following specialised software:

  • screen reading and magnifying software
  • Dragon speech recognition and word prediction
  • closed circuit TV to magnify reading material
  • PCs with large screen monitors
  • accessible work stations.

  • PC peripherals such as one handed keyboards, trackballs

  • accessible work stations.
