Overview

The focus of this unit is the role of accounting in managing an organisation within an increasingly complex business environment. This unit covers the fundamental accounting concepts and practices, which enable informed management planning and decision making to occur. An analysis framework will be introduced that could be applied to assess an organisation’s profitability, liquidity and solvency. Topics include: the concept of Income Statements as a performance report, the Balance Sheet as a statement of financial position, Cash and Accrual Accounting systems, cash flow management, budgeting, internal control cost-volume-price behaviour, and incremental analysis decision making.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Interrogate historical and projected financial statements;
  2. Interpret and critically assess financial statements to solve accounting problems for sound performance management;
  3. Adapt knowledge of accounting analytical techniques to improve performance and evaluate potential for sustainable value creation;
  4. Exhibit accountability in autonomous and collaborative judgements and innovative strategic thinking in response to contemporary and future accounting challenges; and,
  5. Articulate the financial situation of the organisation and recommend strategic options and tactical initiatives;
