Building talent – how Celeste’s strong business foundation has set her up for success

I completed my degree this year and am now a Consultant at Fuse Recruitment. The core units like accounting and finance gave me a good business understanding which is important in this role, such as for working out rates, timesheets and reporting.

Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management)

To succeed in human resources, you need a strong understanding of business and people. Celeste’s interests and communication skills – combined with her study experience, part-time work and placement – have helped her leap into her first role in talent acquisition.

Developing skills, one subject at a time

“I chose to study at VU purely because of the Block Model. It really appealed to me.

“I started the Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) straight out of secondary school. My interest and passion was in business, particularly human resources.

“I was also working as a shift manager at McDonalds, doing long shifts.

“The Block Model helped me to continue to work, study, and dedicate the time to my coursework and assignments.

“Understanding frameworks in human resource management – including behavioural management, human relations and bureaucratic theories – has been very valuable.

“I also developed really cool soft skills, like in communication: being able to communicate with different people, with different levels of understanding.

“I enjoyed that my lecturers had real-world business experience and many of them were working in business. The one-on-one interactions with the lecturers were really good.

“Everyone at VU was helpful, from the lecturers to the Work Integrated Learning team who helped me find placements.”

Making connections on placement

“I did an internship with Fuse Recruitment in the second year of my course. The majority of clients I spoke with were at a managerial level, and the contacts and industry knowledge really helped when it came to finding my first graduate role.

“In terms of interviewing and candidate management, my experience as a manager at McDonalds made it easier for me to learn how to split my time and work with people. And with the understanding of HR that I gained in the course, I was able to take it to a more technical level.”

Recruiting out in the field

“I completed my degree this year and am now a Consultant at Fuse Recruitment.

“The core units like accounting and finance gave me a good business understanding which is important in this role, such as for working out rates, timesheets and reporting.

“I enjoy recruitment; I get to run my own work desk. I take care of manufacturing and industrial. I go out in the field and recruit for a range of roles including forklift drivers, engineers, and executive positions in sales and HR, through to CEO roles.

“Long term, I would love to be in a leadership position, managing a team.”
