Excellence across all aspects of research was a vital factor in Victoria University being ranked in the world’s top 400 universities in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17, placing us firmly in the top 2 per cent of universities worldwide.

The rankingis a list of the best universities globally and is the only international performance ranking to evaluate universities across their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Of these five core pillars research, citations and international outlook comprise 67.5 per cent of the evaluation. In these areas, VU’s highest scores came in the areas of international co-authorship on research papers, research papers to academic staff and citation impact.

This year VU ranked in the 351-400 band of a total 980 universities, a result Vice-Chancellor and President Peter Dawkins described as extremely pleasing.

"As a young university we’re delighted to be ranked in the top 400," Professor Dawkins said. "This is testament to the University’s increased commitment in recent years to improving the quality of learning and teaching, the impact of its research, and the employability of its graduates.

"We're proud of our history of delivering high quality tertiary education in Melbourne. As we celebrate our 25th year as a university in 2016, we are happy to receive this external acknowledgment of our progress so far.

"We continue to enjoy a reputation as an open, excellent and internationally engaged university, with a strong history and reputation in connecting students with their community and chosen industries. While international rankings aren’t an exact science, they can be taken as a broad indicator of progress and position, and we’re happy with this outcome.”

Professor Dawkins said the rankings highlighted VU’s world-class scholarship and research and demonstrated that the University was achieving its mission to be the University of Opportunity and Success.
