VU Mechanical Engineering students are getting up close and personal with the noise and excitement of this weekend’s 2018 Australian Grand Prix.

This year, 15 students are swapping the classroom for the action and adrenaline of the nation’s annual Formula One World Championship.

Victoria University students have been attending the event since 2012, with support from the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Besides witnessing the thrills on track, students have opportunities to visit pit lane, tour garages, and meet inspirational race drivers and car designers.

Mechanical Engineering Senior Lecturer Dr Matthew Lamb brought the group to this year’s event, and says it’s an annual favourite for his students.

"Visiting the Grand Prix helps with team-building at an event which clearly matches student interests and aspirations, while also providing them with insights into technical design and manufacturing."

VU mechanical engineering students can also choose to be involved in the Victoria University Motorsport (VUM), a student-led group that designs components for race cars.
