Overview

This unit investigates aspects of professional practice and specific tasks that need to be undertaken in order to initiate and implement an IT project.

Content includes, definition and characteristics of IT projects; phases of the project life cycle such as planning, execution, monitoring and control, project closure; project team management; project management knowledge areas of scope, schedule and cost; and use of tools such as the Critical Path Method (CPM); Gantt charts and project management software(MS-Project 2016).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Define a project, and identify the special characteristics of IT projects;
  2. Describe the key elements of a project plan, including cost and time schedules;
  3. Undertake project planning and documentation, considering all project requirements, constraints and risks;
  4. Manage project execution activities, monitor and control project scope changes, risks, issues and the delivery of project team work activities; and
  5. Coordinate project closure, consider IT support plans and obtain final project sign-off.
