Overview

Preservice teachers build their mathematical pedagogical content knowledge and skills in the strands of Number and Algebra in the curriculum documents. Preservice teachers advance their teaching knowledge and practise by engaging in the latest advances in mathematics educational research and practice. Preservice teachers review national and international mathematics curricula, teaching practice and assessment. They analyse and respond to various types of student data used in primary mathematics settings and explore methods of promoting student agency and authentic learning experiences. Preservice teachers design an innovative, differentiated and enriched unit of work encompassing assessment and problem solving strategies to deepen student learning of mathematics. Preservice teachers explore the key mathematical proficiencies.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse and evaluate a range of approaches to twenty first century mathematics / numeracy education in the primary years including digital learning and teaching with digital technologies;
  2. Design strategies that motivate and develop students’ mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and understanding of mathematical concepts, conventions and applications in real world situations;
  3. Contextualise and apply understanding of mathematics / numeracy content;
  4. Assess the learning and development students have achieved through the teaching approaches and learning activities conducted in the mathematics curriculum; and
  5. Analyse and implement appropriate learning and teaching strategies for a diverse range of students and demonstrate an understanding of how to engage sensitively and confidently with parents/carers.
