Sport and Exercise Nutrition

    This unit will provide students with an understanding of the nutritional requirements for sport and exercise performance. Students will develop an understanding of the nutritional management to support physical activity and training programs undertaken by children, adolescents and adult recreational, sub-elite and/or elite athletes. Students will develop skills and the understanding of the assessment/provision of such topic areas as: Hydration, training and competition diets, diets to aid recovery, sports supplements and ergogenic aids, and various methods for assessing energy expenditure and body composition.

    Learning Outcomes

    On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

    1. Describe physiological and metabolic processes involved in different physical activities;
    2. Adapt and justify different diet-related strategies to enhance training and performance in athletes and critically review the scientific research to support these strategies;
    3. Investigate and justify recovery requirements in various population groups and competitive levels;
    4. Articulate the practical considerations in the provision of dietary management strategies for athletes; and
    5. Critique and interpret various methods for assessing energy expenditure and body composition.
