Overview

This unit will introduce students to knowledge and concepts required to operate safely across a diverse range of field based environments and ecosystems. Students will investigate current professional practice requirements and industry common practice. This foundational knowledge unit will provide a basis for further theoretical and conceptual exploration in future units.

On completion of this unit students will understand the requirements for them to operate safely and provide safe operating environments for dependant groups. Students will consider environment specific Emergency Medical Response (EMR) protocols, the use of communications technology and industry standard incident reporting protocols. Students will develop an appreciation of the physical, mental and emotional demands of safe operation in natural environments.

This unit will be primarily class based with outdoor field teaching as required.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate personal safety in a range of natural environments and ecosystems;
  2. Demonstrate industry common practice in the application of safety management protocols in natural environments and ecosystems;
  3. Explain the use of a range of communication and technical equipment and their application to safe operation with dependent groups in natural environments; and,
  4. Organise a range of emergency management resources applicable to operating in natural environments.
