Overview

This units builds on Speech Pathology Intervention Practices 1 by exploring a range of impairment informed speech pathology interventions across the speech pathology communication domains in working with individuals across the lifespan and inclusive of diversity. This unit will particularly focus on exploring of principles and components related to planning speech pathology interventions, measurement of communication and/or swallowing outcomes and discharge planning using evidence-based practice principles and processes. Students will engage via inquiry, case-based, simulation and reflective learning activities. Intervention and discharge practices will also be considered in the broader professional, regulatory, ethical and legal contexts in which speech pathology professional practice occurs.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically appraise the scientific evidence for the purpose of planning evidence- informed speech pathology, intervention and discharge processes;
  2. Implement and critically evaluate speech pathology interventions targeting enhancement in body structure, body function, and/or activity and participation for individuals with a range of communication and/or swallowing difficulties;
  3. Plan and justify appropriate methods for measuring outcomes following implementation of speech pathology interventions;
  4. Monitor individual performance within speech pathology interventions to formulate appropriate modifications to maximise outcomes and discharge planning;
  5. Critically reflect on personal skills to establish, review and revise goals for professional development.
