Overview

The General English 4B unit aims to further develop student’s general English proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, grammar and vocabulary. The unit is for students with a high Upper Intermediate level of English and focuses on a range of topics of general interest such as Human Achievement, History and Protest, Current Events and The Media. By the end of the unit, students will be able to confidently engage in a variety of challenging discussions in addition to being able to write clear and well organised written texts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Listening: Understand and respond to a range of authentic informal and formal extended texts (live news broadcasts, podcasts, interviews, discussions and talks) on familiar and unfamiliar topics;
  2. Reading: Comprehend and respond to a range of authentic formal and informal texts (newspaper, articles, reports, websites, narratives, graphs and tables) on familiar and unfamiliar topics;
  3. Writing: Write a range of texts for general purposes (survey, report, narrative) with a reasonable degree of independence and accuracy; and
  4. Speaking: Actively participate in a range of extended texts (discussions, presentation) on familiar topics and unfamiliar topics and present clear detailed description or summary and provide explanations and/or arguments with a reasonable degree of fluency, flexibility and precision.
