Overview

EAP 5A is specialised 5-week unit focusing on the development of academic language skills for students who want to enter a bachelor course at VU in the future. The unit consolidates academic language and skills at a High Upper Intermediate level of English. Core language and academic skills are developed to facilitate student access to academic conventions and expectations in an Australian academic context. The unit provides a foundation to the skills necessary to commence EAP 5B. After successful completion of EAP 5B, students will have demonstrated that they have met the English admission requirements for entry into VU Higher Education courses that require an IELTS of 6.0 or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Listening: understand and engage in a range of relatively complex spoken texts (lectures, talks, extended discussions, conversations)
  2. Reading: comprehend, analyse & critically evaluate information from a range of texts
  3. Writing: write a simple group case study report applying a common theory to a familiar problem; write a critical response that synthesises information from a range of texts; and
  4. Speaking: Work collaboratively to prepare and deliver a formal seminar presentation based on a familiar topic.
