    Overview

    The unit of study builds on the learning from Algebra, Functions and Graphs of Functions and is intended for students pursuing careers in engineering and applied science. The content will introduce students to concepts of rates of change, differential calculus, derivatives and their applications as well as the geometry and algebra of vectors. Students will cover mathematics that is required in engineering and applied science. Students will study differentiation of single and multi-variable functions. They will be introduced to differentiation by covering limits and differentiation by first principles. Students will be able to apply these techniques to applications such as rates of change and small approximations, minima and maxima, area under a curve and volumes of revolution. Students will also study vectors and will be studying vector algebra and properties of vectors which will be applied to solving vector valued problems.

    Learning Outcomes

    On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

    1. Interpret and draw inferences from mathematical information presented in a variety of forms;
    2. Use problem solving strategies and reasoning to interpret and solve complex mathematical problems;
    3. Compare and contrast mathematical arguements and make decisions about the reasonableness of the results;
    4. Use technology to investigate and explore advanced mathematical concepts in a range of contexts.
