Overview

Applied Clinical Theory and Skills 3 further develops students' knowledge and skills with indirect osteopathic techniques for common musculoskeletal complaints. Students will extend their knowledge of diagnostic imaging and will have the opportunity to analyse and interpret images featuring clinical pathologies common to osteopathic practice. Students will also develop an appreciation for other diagnostic imaging modalities for musculoskeletal complaints. Students will be introduced to key concepts related to the musculoskeletal care of obstetric, paediatric and adolescent populations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Elucidate the professional scope of an osteopath with respect to diagnostic imaging in the health care setting;
  2. Formulate likely diagnoses based on findings from diagnostic images and recommend appropriate management strategies;
  3. Contextualise indirect osteopathic techniques for the spine, pelvis and periphery; and
  4. Elucidate the anatomical, physiological, functional and psychosocial considerations relating to the management and monitoring of the paediatric, adolescent, and obstetric patient.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

The case study assesses fundamental knowledge of the osteopath’s role in diagnostic imaging within the Australian healthcare system. The Diagnostic Imaging Analysis assesses students’ ability to interpret patient films and propose appropriate management. The OPSS assesses students’ understanding and skills in performing ‘indirect’ osteopathic techniques. Finally, the Clinical Reasoning Task requires students to provide ‘best practice’ responses to clinical problems related to the paediatric, adolescent and obstetric patient.
