The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the English language proficiency of people who want to work or study where English is the main language. It is recognised by higher education providers, governments and employers all over the world. The test assesses the four English language macro skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking. The IELTS Academic unit aims to develop language skills and strategies to enable students to achieve an advanced outcome on the IELTS test.
Skill development will include:
Listening: Listening for specific purposes, notetaking;
Reading: Speed reading strategies, understanding graphs and charts, analysing complex reading texts;
Speaking: Expressing ideas and opinions, pronunciation; and
Writing: Analysing essay questions, describing information in graphs and charts, organising ideas and grammatical accuracy.
Throughout the unit, students will be introduced to the structure of the different components of the test and will complete regular practice tests relating to the four areas. Students will focus on specific strategies to deal with specialised question types in addition to time management skills.
