This unit aims to develop the reading, writing, listening and speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills and academic skills necessary to undertake an undergraduate course at Victoria University.

Students must be assessed as having an Upper Intermediate level of English or an overall IELTS of 5.5 with writing at 5.5 and no other band less than 5.0 ( or equivalent).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Reading: 1. Identify, analyse and evaluate information from a range of academic text types for academic research purposes; 2. Follow complex formal instructions and explanations relevant to an academic context; 3. Review own texts in relation to academic requirements.  
  2. Writing: 1. Write a range of texts for academic purpose (critical summary, research essay, case study report, reflective journal) 2. Produce a reference list according to specified conventions; 3. Edit and format own texts in relation to academic requirements.  
  3. Speaking: 1. Engage in sustained formal interactions in a study context; 2. Prepare and give an extended oral presentation on a researched topic 3. Respond to complex questions for academic study purposes.  
  4. Listening: 1. Demonstrate understanding in casual conversation; 2. Demonstrate critical understanding of extended academic oral texts; 3. Follow and respond to complex oral instructions and questions for study tasks.
