Overview

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to interpret, produce and modify electrotechnology drawings.It includes interpreting circuit, wiring and mechanical diagrams, equipment and cable/connection schedules and manuals; producing and modifying a range of electrical drawings; and using computer drawing packages to produce and modify drawings.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • extracting information from drawings and diagrams
  • interpreting drawings, diagrams and plans to determine the location of electrical/communication/audio accessories, appliances and cable runs
  • using drawings, diagrams, cable/connection schedules, industry standards and codes of practice used in electrotechnology work
  • interpreting drawings, diagrams, cable/connection schedules and manuals correctly
  • using correct conventions in freehand drawings
  • sketching and marking up basic circuit diagrams
  • using drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals to convey information and ideas and obtain job information
  • producing the following:
  • circuit diagram
  • single line diagram
  • termination drawing
  • loop drawing
  • wiring diagram
  • block diagram
  • marking up an existing printed drawing
  • using a computer drawing package to:
  • produce a drawing
  • modify a drawing
  • checking drawings for accuracy and compliance with job specifications.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
