Overview

This unit of study will introduce students to the anatomy and physiology of the major systems of the human body and their close interdependence. Topics covered in this unit of study include the function and structure of cells, the major systems of the human body (skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, endocrine and reproductive). Basic pathological processes underlying disease will be explored, followed by investigation of the major disorders associated with organ systems.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamental structure, functions and interactions of the musculoskeletal, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive endocrine and reproductive systems in the human body;
  2. Apply conduct a range of scientific investigations, including the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data and interpretation of evidence ;
  3. Explain how the body systems act and interacts to maintain a constant internal environment (homeostasis); and
  4. Locate relevant scientific literature and cite references using appropriate conventions.
