Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage non-emergency and emergency situations. Individuals are required to follow procedures, evaluate scene safety and identify any security risks and to communicate and coordinate with other emergency services personnel involved in patient care at the scene. It also describes skills required for coordination with and by other emergency services personnel.This unit applies to pre-hospital and out-of-hospital health care workers.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, incl the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
* ensuring safety of self, patient and others
* identifying hazards, real or potential, where there are risks to participants or bystanders
* minimising risk by enlisting hazard reduction agents
* ensuring rapid and safe access and egress
* engaging existing personnel for situational information
* analysing available information and making decisions that ensure effective scene management
* managing multiple competing priorities
* identifying and implementing available resources in accordance with established clinical guidelines and protocols.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will advise students of class notes, reading materials produced by VU Polytechnic and further support via VU Polytechnic e-learning system and/or in person.
