Overview

This unit introduces you to Arts education and the practice of teaching with and through creative approaches in primary education. These approaches include an introduction to curriculum, planning, pedagogies and assessment that promote effective learning and teaching of the Arts, with a focus on the areas of music, drama, dance, visual arts design, technology and media. You will also consider how these Arts areas can productively intersect with other curriculum areas. Students will explore meaningful self-expression and communication through the Arts through a range of creative approaches.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Adapt understanding of how children learn in diverse ways in the Arts (visual arts, drama, dance, computer mediated art, design, technology, music and performance);
  2. Articulate the Arts and Technology curricula in relation to teaching and learning in primary schools including awareness of the relevant guidelines, assessment, procedures and resources that support differentiated teaching strategies;
  3. Plan, design, resource (including ICT), teach and evaluate lessons that engage and challenge students, foster their creativity and imagination in learning in the Arts, design and technology, and in connecting with and deepening understandings in other curriculum areas;
  4. Exemplify diverse ways of knowing in areas of artistic expression, and how participation in the Arts (including the creation of an arts-rich learning environment) can engage a diverse range of student needs in learning; and
  5. Examine literacy and numeracy demands in Arts education.

Project: This collaborative task is designed to provide students with an opportunity (working with their peers and individually) to integrate Arts and Technology knowledge gained during the semester's activities into the development of teaching activities and strategies that are differentiated to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities.

Presentation: Students explore and develop their own Arts practice and understanding of creative processes, culminating in an oral presentation, performance or exhibition at the end of the unit.

Effective word limit of 3000 words in total, or equivalent.
