Lawyer's rapid rise

Just four years after graduating, Damian Clancy was appointed senior associate with a major law firm.

"The biggest attraction in choosing VU to study law was its mooting program. I saw that I could practice what I was learning in the classroom. VU does a lot of inter-varsity mooting – more than any other university. VU also had a reputation of having a very practical law school.

It was drummed into us that we need to go out and get some practical experience. During my final year I worked with a small community law firm assisting people involved in Family Law litigation who didn’t have legal representation.

After graduating I worked in commercial law before joining Monahan + Rowell, a boutique insurance firm. When it merged in 2012 with Colin Biggers & Paisley (CBP) – one of the oldest law firms in the country with more than 300 staff – I was appointed a senior associate.

Oxford University has invited me to undertake a doctorate, so I’m planning on going to the UK for 4–5 years to work and study part time."
