Counsellor Andrew Chua is the inaugural recipient of the APS award for innovation in psychology education.
"I was awarded the inaugural Psychology Education Resource Prize at the 48th Annual Australian Psychological Society Conference for the psychology program that I developed at Wanganui Park Secondary College.
I am honoured to gain the recognition from my peers for innovative teaching and the promotion of psychology, with all the other nominees presenting programs in tertiary settings.
Being passionate about helping young people, I wanted to create a subject that was relevant to their lives. The 20-week program helped engage Year 8 students in a positive way.
The program is the first of its kind in Victoria. Prior to this, such electives were only offered to Year 10 students. The program has been running successfully since 2006, and is still one of the school’s most popular electives.
Since then, other secondary schools have adopted aspects of the program.
My counselling work at VU is focused on assisting students get the most out of their university experience. This award highlights my working knowledge of the personal goals of the student, and the staff involved in curriculum design and implementation."
