How Will champions integrity in sport

Will Haines’ pursuit for fairness is matched only by his love of sport. So his postgraduate course in sport integrity offered the perfect career path – and invaluable networks to enter his dream job with the AFL.

“I’m a big believer in equality, which is one of the foundations of integrity in sport. Rules and regulations must be in place to ensure everyone can experience an equal opportunity to participate, and to create a level playing field for all involved.

I was ready to develop my career, so I chose VU for its good reputation in sport; and the Master of Sport Business and Integrity was specific to the area of the industry I wanted to be a part of. Sport integrity is such an important area of the industry now.

A big part of my course was the two-week study tour in Madrid, which involved a lot of practical learning and invaluable experiences. We visited various sporting organisations, including Universidad Europea de Madrid, and engaged with professionals who provided great insights into the industry – the different skills they use, and the challenges they face.

My lecturers provided me with great support during my studies – they were always open to providing additional assistance, and flexibility when needed, and only ever an email or call away.

All of the course material was extremely beneficial, but one of the greatest benefits to me has been the contacts I’ve made. I’ve befriended people across several sporting organisations who are always willing to help out and provide advice. I got into my current Intelligence Analyst role at the AFL (a full-time position that started as an internship) thanks to networking with a fellow student. Their recommendation created a point of difference between myself and other candidates.”
