From VU student to medical doctor
The teachers at VU were fantastic and because the class sizes were very small, they knew you by name.
Sharlyne Sekran (Fiji)
Bachelor of Biomedical Science
For as long as she could remember, Sharlyne Sekran dreamed of being a doctor. And thanks to VU, that dream is now her reality.
The Fijian-born VU alumna studied VU’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science from 2010 to 2012, enabling her to transfer to medicine at Deakin University where she completed her journey to becoming a qualified physician.
VU’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science is a prerequisite for medicine so it’s a very medically-based, hands-on course which covers all the necessary medical units, such as anatomy and physiology.
“The teachers at VU were fantastic and because the class sizes were very small, they knew you by name,”
Sharlyne says.
After graduating from VU in 2012, Sharlyne returned to her home country and volunteered at Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva for one year before applying for her medical degree, which she completed in 2017.
She is now an intern at Geelong Hospital, working across the surgical and urology wards as well as the emergency department.
Sharlyne, whose sister studied law at VU, says she was attracted by the University’s reputation for being inclusive, friendly and supportive.
“My advice to other international students is to not choose a university based on how big or popular they are.
“If I could study again I’d choose VU in a heartbeat because it’s a more personalised learning experience and the outcome is the same because I got into medicine just fine.”
