For Anastasija Manevski, hairdressing is both a creative outlet and a way to connect with all different types of people. She shares how she’s working towards her career dreams at Victoria University (VU) Polytechnic.

“My love of hairdressing started when I was a little kid. I was four years old and I got access to a pair of my uncle's scissors and I cut all my hair off. I had a pixie cut before it became a cool thing. Ever since then, here I am, working towards that dream.

“What I love about hairdressing is the artistic expression that you find in it. You're not limited in what you can and can't do. You can express yourself through hair, whether it's your own or doing someone else's. It’s a creative outlet.”

Practical learning with industry experts

“What I personally like most about my course is the different ways you can study your content. It's a blended program, so you have your practical lessons with your teachers on campus, and you also have your theoretical side at home.

“It means you don't disrupt your physical learning by having to stop and read like you would in a regular classroom setting.

“It really gives you the opportunity to dig deep into the knowledge and experience of your teachers and try to find the best techniques, or how you can properly execute what you're trying to achieve.”

Real-world salon experience

“Working in the salon here at VU, you get to meet different kinds of people. We're all diverse. We all come from different backgrounds and beliefs. It’s a really good way to expose yourself to those things and educate yourself.

“You get to see that no matter how different we are, everyone can come together though something as small as getting your hair washed, or getting a cut, or taking someone’s hair from black to blonde.

“It really gives you that sense of belonging, helping someone feel as beautiful as they are on the inside.

“The facilities here in the VU City Tower are amazing – it's such a beautiful building. You've got all these different areas, so you can go somewhere quiet like the library to study, or you can explore all the different levels.”

Anastasija’s advice: just go for it

“After I finish my certificate, I plan on hopefully coming back and doing barbering as well. My future goal is to open up my own salon from home, so that for any future family that may happen, I can spend more time with those who I love.

“My best advice for someone who's interested in studying hairdressing is just do it. By not doing it, you’re only prolonging the achievement of your own dreams.

“Live your life for you. Don't live it for anyone else, because at the end of the day, when you look back at your life you are going to wish you did the things that you didn't, so the best way to live is with no regrets.”
