Bringing music to the community

Lyn Spiteri chose VU’s Master of Education for its diverse range of topics, which she felt would inform her teaching practice, and supplement her holistic approach to students and their relationship with music.

"I’ve been teaching in an instrumental capacity for seven years, specialising predominantly in woodwind. I’ve also been involved in ensemble direction, classroom teaching, curriculum planning, and resource development.

My greatest career achievements include establishing a reciprocal relationship between one of my school programs and Westgate Concert Band, the implementation of combined ensemble performances at major events, and the initiation of a privately run community-based educative music festival. Through my studies at VU, I hope to broaden my educative scope and extend the benefits to my musical community.

My thesis highlighted the significant link between ensemble music and wellbeing, with the aim of devising an educative model in this area. While I studied, I was also Co-Assistant Musical Director of the Westgate Concert Band and a sessional instrumental teacher at three schools.

Following graduation, I became program manager at Chasing Sound Music School.

I enjoyed the sense of collegial spirit I experienced throughout this course. The lecturers are experienced, passionate, and many have taught in schools and situations that the cohort can relate to. Their anecdotes allow for authentic practical resonance with us as educators or pre-service teachers."
