Anni enters aged care sector with the help of Free TAFE

Meet Anni. She completed the Certificate Ill in Individual Support CHC33015 under Free TAFE, reaping the benefits of tuition-fee-free learning and a career-changing opportunity.

All of my experiences were wonderful, from online studies due to COVID-19 restrictions, to the great explanations from teachers about subject material, to the tips and advice given in class before we went on placement.

Work placement is an important part of the course and a great way to practise the skills learned in class. VU Polytechnic arranged for Anni to complete placement at Bupa Aged Care Ballarat, a convenient location to where she resides.

Anni learned first-hand about Parkinson’s disease, dementia and anxiety, useful for building knowledge and professional experience. She also learned how to administer first aid, retain balance exercises, and handle falls and accidents with care.

Equally importantly, she discovered new skills that are difficult to teach within the classroom. Anni found herself using emotional intelligence at the right place and time to improve the experience of her residents.

“I learned to more be understanding about the residents. They are unique and have beautiful souls.”

For students commencing work placement, she advises you to “be helpful, friendly and hungry to learn as many skills as possible.”

Upon completing her course, Anni was supported with references from her teachers to apply for jobs. It wasn’t long before she was offered a position at Japara Kiralee Ballarat where she currently works.

When asked what advice she would pass on to other students, Anni recommends asking your teachers and supervisors about anything that you do not understand.

They have experience and knowledge, and will give you advice that will help you in your studies, career and future. So, if you have this opportunity like I did, please find a course to study. If it’s Free TAFE, even better. Your life and future will be changed for be better.
