Gaining an appetite for university life

I gained so many new experiences and opportunities, both on and off-campus. I learnt not only the content of the course but skills that I can take with me throughout the workforce and life.

Unsure about making the commitment to study a business degree, Danielle Walton enrolled in the Diploma of Business (Enterprise) at VU to give herself a 'taste' of what to expect.

"By discovering the world of business through the diploma, I was able to make up my mind about whether to study the degree and what area to specialise in.

The great thing about the diploma is that it covers the same content as the first year of the degree, but I didn’t have the pressure of committing to a three-year degree.

Following the diploma, I entered the second year of VU's Bachelor of Business, specialising in international hospitality management.

My favourite unit was marketing because I really enjoyed the challenge of collaborating with a business to devise a marketing plan.

I gained self-confidence from working in teams and during my placement at Kilmore Racing Club. It exposed me to different elements of the hospitality industry including racing, TAB, gaming, functions, bistro and offsite catering. My placement led to being offered my current role with the Club as a bistro supervisor and functions coordinator. They have provided me with mentoring in developing and occupational health and safety.

The teaching style of the lecturers was also fantastic. I learnt not only the content of the course but skills that stay with me throughout the workforce and life."
