VU Thrive Grant
The VU Thrive Grant supports current students who are experiencing financial hardship.
The grant covers education-related costs to help you continue and succeed in you studies. This can include textbooks, tools of the trade and other course materials that are directly related to your study.
Eligibility
You may be eligible for the VU Thrive Grant if you:
- are a current onshore VU student
- are enrolled in a higher education or TAFE course
- are enrolled in at least 48 credit points (higher education) or 270 hours (TAFE).
- are experiencing financial hardship related to your study expenses
- have not already received this grant in the same academic year
- can provide supporting evidence, such as bank statements, invoices and quotes.
Commonwealth Practicum Payment (CPP)
Some courses may be covered by the Commonwealth Practicum Payment, also known as CPP.
If you have received a CPP payment within the past 12 months, you are not eligible to receive the VU Thrive Grant for the same period.
However, if you apply for CPP and are not approved, you may still be considered for the VU Thrive Grant.
What's covered by the grant
The grant can help with eligible education-related expenses that support your study.
Examples include:
- textbooks or course materials
- tools of trade or uniforms required for your course
- required checks or registration documents, such as police, medical or working with children checks
- placement-related costs, such as accommodation, food, fuel or travel
- study-related relocation costs.
Applications are assessed based on the expense, supporting evidence and available funding.
What costs are not covered?
- VU course fees
- Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)
- fines, including parking fines
- personal debt, such as credit cards or loans
- visa costs
- expenses that are not directly related to your study.
Value
The value of the grant will be determined based on the evidence provided in your application.
When you apply, you should identify any expenses you are hoping to cover with the grant. This includes:
- travel
- uniforms
- placement expenses
- textbooks
- tools of trade
- other eligible study-related costs.
If your application is successful, payment will be made to your nominated bank account within 10–15 business days after you accept the offer.
Assessment & selection
All questions must be completed in detail to determine eligibility.
Applications will be assessed by the VU Scholarships Office.
For additional support with other expenses, you may be referred to the Student Welfare team.
