If you're a VU library member you can usually request to borrow a book that is at another VU campus, or is currently on loan. You can also renew a standard loan if you're still using the book, unless a hold has been placed on the item. However, borrowing is currently not available, and holds cannot been placed.

You need to ensure you return the borrowed item at the end of the specified loan period. Items can be returned to the following VU library sites which all have external return chutes: Footscray Park, St Albans and Werribee campus libraries.

If you're a VU student, unpaid fines can prevent you from attending graduation or re-enrolling, so it's important to keep up to date with your loans. However, all infringements from 23 March 2020 will be waived.

Placing a hold on an item

Placing a hold on an item has been suspended, so the services below are not available.

Library members can request books that are located at another campus of Victoria University or ask for a book that is already out on loan to be held for them upon its return.

  • Patrons can place holds themselves through Library Search and logging into My Library. Holds may not be placed over the telephone.
  • Requests for holds may be placed on standard two to four week loans.

Items that can't be placed on hold

  • Items that have a restricted loan period:
    • one-day loans
    • VU Sydney items.
  • Reserve items.
  • Items deemed 'not for loan':
    • reference
    • periodicals
    • special collection items
  • Equipment.

Contact the service desk at a campus to book these items.

Restrictions on holds

  • Victoria University staff and students may place a total of 10 holds at any one time.
  • Non-Victoria University patrons may place a total of three holds at any one time.
  • Library users are asked to collect their holds as soon as possible, as the library only keeps hold items for five working days.
  • Library users collecting holds will have them issued for four weeks except where there are two or more holds on a single item. In this case, the loan period will be reduced to 14 days (two weeks) only. Refer to your date-due receipt.

Automatic renewals

The library will automatically renew all your standard loans two days before the due date, unless:

  • you have an overdue item (this will stop automatic renewals for all of your loans)
  • the item has been requested by someone else
  • you have an outstanding library fine
  • the item is an inter-library loan item
  • the item has a restricted loan period, is on Reserve, or is located at VU Sydney
  • your library privileges have been suspended for any reason
  • you have already renewed the item the maximum number of times.

Maximum number of renewals apply to external borrowers (including ULANZ and CAVAL) – three renewals.

The library will send you a courtesy email to let you know when an item has been automatically renewed, or if you've reached your maximum borrowing time. Please ensure that you return these items by the due date in the email. Items not returned by the due date may incur a fine.

Renewals can be made online via My Library, by phoning +61 3 9919 4266 or in person.

Loan periods

Loan periods may vary depending on the type of item you are borrowing (standard or restricted) and your relationship with Victoria University (staff member, student, research candidate, or external borrower).

Standard loans

All VU members – VU TAFE and undergraduate students, VU staff, VU postgraduate students (PhD, Masters and Honours), have an unlimited number of loans.

The standard loan period varies for VU members:

  • VU TAFE and undergraduate students – 28 days
  • VU staff, VU postgraduate students (PhD, Masters and Honours) – 84 days (12 weeks) or equivalent to a semester.

The loan period for all non-VU members is 28 days, with a maximum of 10 loan items.

Restricted loans

Certain items held by the Library will be restricted to shorter loan periods due to high demand.

  • Books in high demand – one, three or 14 days
  • Audiovisual (DVDs) – seven or 14 days (normally)
  • Audiovisual (all other types) – seven days (normally)
  • Restricted audiovisual – one day
  • Reserve collection – two hours (within the Library only)
  • Laptops – (student use only) photo ID, student ID card or access to MyVU app required – five hours.

Library fines

All infringements from 23 March 2020 will be waived. The following will fees will apply again when normal service resumes.

If an item becomes overdue your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the item is returned. If an infringement has been applied borrowing privileges will be suspended until all outstanding charges are paid.

Any unpaid fines and bills attached to your library record can be seen in MyLibrary.

  • Items more than 28 days overdue (or less than 28 days for short-term loan items) will attract an infringement penalty of $20.
  • Overdue items with a hold placed on them are issued a Recall Notice; if the item is not returned within seven days from the date of notice, there is an infringement penalty of $20 per recalled item.
  • Items overdue from participating CAVAL libraries will also attract an additional Victoria University infringement penalty of $20.
  • Items that are not returned, lost or damaged normally attract a penalty of $125 per item.
  • Library fines can also prevent you from re-enrolling, graduating or accessing your results so it is important to clear the debt immediately.

Notices from the Library are sent to the email address on your Library record. For VU students and staff, this is your VU email address. For reciprocal and external borrowers, this is the email address you provided when you registered. It is your responsibility to ensure your email address is kept up-to-date.

Paying your fine

Library fines can be paid with a credit card using our Online Secure Payment System (your record will be cleared within one business day).

Please ensure that all overdue items have been returned before making a payment (online payments cannot be accepted unless items are returned). Use the non-returned item amount to pay for items that are not returned due to loss or damage.

Payments can also be made at your Campus Library Service Desk with your Papercut printing account.

Contact us if you are unsure of the amount owing. Payments are processed during business hours only – if payments are made outside of business hours, they will be processed the next business day.
