VU library members can request to borrow a book that is at another VU campus library, or which is currently on loan. Standard loans will be automatically renewed, unless someone else has requested to put a hold on the item.

Items can be returned to any campus library during opening hours. Self-service machines for borrowing or returning your items are located within most campus libraries. Outside of opening hours, items may also be returned to libraries which have external return chutes (Footscray Park, St Albans and Werribee campus libraries).

You can also post items (all return postage costs are your responsibility) to the Library postal address.

Placing a hold on an item

Via the hold system Library members can request books that are located at another campus library of Victoria University or request that a book that is out on loan be held for them upon its return.

  • Hold requests are self-service and cannot be placed over the telephone. Library members can place holds themselves through Library Search and logging into My Library.
  • Requests for holds may be placed on standard loans.

Items that can't be placed on hold

  • Items that have a restricted loan period:
    • one-day loan items
    • VU Sydney items.
  • Reserve items.
  • Items deemed 'not for loan': special collection items and equipment.

Contact the service desk at a campus library to book equipment items.

Restrictions on holds

  • Victoria University staff and students may place a total of 10 holds at any one time.
  • Non-Victoria University members may place a total of three holds at any one time.
  • Requestors are asked to collect their holds as soon as possible, as hold items will be held for five working days.
  • Items are normally issued for a four-week renewable loan. However, if the item has other holds on it, the loan period will be reduced to two weeks. Refer to your date-due receipt.

Automatic renewals

The library will automatically renew all your standard loans two days before the due date, unless:

  • the item has been requested by someone else
  • the item is an inter-library loan item
  • the item has a restricted loan period, is on Reserve, or is located at VU Sydney
  • you have an overdue item which will stop automatic renewals for all of your loans
  • your library privileges have been suspended for any other reason.

Maximum number of renewals that apply to external borrowers (including ULANZ and CAVAL) is three renewals.

The library will send you a courtesy email to let you know when an item has been automatically renewed, or if you've reached your maximum borrowing time. Please ensure that you return these items by the due date in the email.

Renewals can be made online via My Library and LibChat, by phoning +61 3 9919 4266 or in person.
