Education international placements

Bachelor of Education students from the College of Education have participated in international practicum placements to China, Malaysia, Timor Leste, and Indonesia.

These programs are subsidized by the Australian Government AsiaBound, and New Colombo Plan schemes.

Funding has been secured for 2014 and 2015 to take groups of students to Japan and Thailand to study language and culture, and engage in a placement experience.

About the program

International placements are demanding, but rewarding. Students engage in a series of preparatory university classes, and are then supported in order to travel in groups to our partner universities, and immerse themselves in a different language and culture for two to three weeks.

They study the local language, and complete the elective unit AEB 2303 Teaching and Learning in International Contexts while abroad.

Students also complete 10-14 days of placement in a local school, teaching English. This placement provides credit towards their professional placement requirements.

Working in schools in Asian countries is challenging work, but students develop a whole range of pedagogical skills during this experience, that they can utilize on their return to Australia.

Student experiences

Here's what a couple of our previous students have to say about this experience.

"Teaching at SMA N9 in Yogyakarta was an enriching experience. We were able to make strong relationships and connections with both the students and teachers. This opportunity allowed us to grow and learn from one another. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience!"

"Travelling to Indonesia as a pre-service teacher has been an invaluable experience that has opened up a whole perspectives about teaching, language and culture. I feel like I am more equipped to teach in schools after experiencing and developing my teaching schools while on the Study Tour."

Jessia Boucher, fourth year

"This tour study has been the best thing I have done over the past six years of this course, the experiences we encounter cannot be taught in a classroom or read in a book they must be lived. I learnt more from these students than I could ever teach them."
