As an educational leader for more than 25 years, Professor Walsh’s career spanned the United States, Asia and Australia, including eight years of service and leadership at Victoria University.

Professor Chris Walsh commenced with VU Online as Academic Director in 2018 and has served as Dean and Chief Academic Officer since 2021.

He was a valued colleague, friend and leader, and the University wishes to acknowledge his life and passing, and the sadness felt by those who knew him.

VU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker reflected on Professor Walsh’s impact.

“The passing of Chris is a profound loss for our entire VU community. As an educator, academic and Dean, he was tremendously generous in spirit and deeply caring. We’ve heard so many messages about how Chris lifted others up, how he was so encouraging, and how he always championed fairness, inclusion and education for all. His positive impact on colleagues and students alike was remarkable. We will remember Chris for his integrity, his kindness, and the excellent inspiration he brought to those around him.”

VU Senior Deputy-Vice Chancellor Professor John Germov also shared his respects.

“Across the University, Chris made significant contributions to learning and teaching quality, serving for many years on academic governance committees with a meticulous, fearless, and collegial approach. The University has benefitted greatly from his dedicated service, sharp insight and deep understanding of education.”

Mr David Barnett, Chair of the VU Online Board of Directors shared on behalf of the Board, the sense of loss felt across VU Online and the wider Victoria University.

“Chris was a deeply respected executive, a generous mentor, and a much-loved colleague who opened doors for others. He was a passionate champion of equity, inclusion, and social justice, with advocacy for women in leadership and LGBTQI+ visibility and belonging at the core of his values-led approach.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. VU Online will honour Chris’s extraordinary contribution to our organisation and community in the near future, in close consultation with his family,” Mr Barnett said.
