A night of celebration at the Student Excellence Awards
It wasn't a typical Wednesday study evening for 74 Victoria University (VU) students who were recognised at our Student Excellence Awards night.
An annual event, this year's celebration was held at Zinc, Federation Square.
Students received awards and citations in 77 categories, across TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
The awards were supported by industry partners and philanthropic donors, many of whom were in attendance on the night, alongside students, their families, and VU staff.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker extended personal congratulations to the award recipients.
“We can only thrive through a collective embrace of excellence, and you reflect that. We’re here to celebrate what students have achieved, and what lies ahead… students who shape industries and communities,” Professor Shoemaker said.
We know that you represent the very best of the university and we’re incredibly proud of you.
Three student speakers shared reflections on their careers and study journey.
Jingyu Li – recipient of the Westpac Enterprise Platform Engineering Futures Prize
Jingyu Li, who has completed a Diploma of Information Technology said that “studying at VU has been a very meaningful experience”
Jingyu’s long-term goal is to use AI to improve healthcare, “helping people detect health risks earlier, access treatment sooner, and avoid some of the suffering caused by illness. I hope to work towards this over the coming years, and I will give my very best along the way.”
Suzanna Klisanin – recipient of the VET Excellence Achievement Award.
Suzanna Klisanin is completing a Diploma of Remedial Massage. Suzanna returned to study alongside her career in hospitality and was drawn to the course because she was seeking a client-focused health profession.
“After facing significant health challenges, I developed a deeper appreciation for wellbeing, balance, and supporting others. This journey has been challenging at times, but also very rewarding, and I am proud of my progress.”
“Receiving this award means a great deal to me, and it motivates me to continue growing in this profession and making a positive difference in people’s lives.”
Natalie Delmonte – recipient of the Karen-Leigh Edward Medal

Natalie Delmonte, who is completing a Bachelor of Nursing, thanked VU academic and teaching staff for “facilitating an exceptional learning environment.”
“Being in such a supportive learning environment at Victoria University is shaping me into the best possible nurse I can be.
“I would also like to congratulate all the other award recipients. I hope you feel proud of the dedication and hard work you’ve put into your studies, and it’s wonderful to see that effort being recognised.”
She also reflected on Professor Leigh-Edward’s legacy. “I’ll leave you with the ethos of Karen-Leigh Edward, “Be proud of the work you do, who you are, and the difference you make.”
