VU's special collections
VU Library’s Special Collections contain unique research material on the Australian Communist Party, Australian Socialist groups, and left-wing Student groups. Collections with left-wing material include:
- Radical Literature Collection with materials reflecting communist, Marxist or Trotskyist views, and relating to subjects such as the Petrov affair, the basic wage and cost of living during the war years, and atomic testing.
- Ruth & Maurie Crow Collection with materials related to political and social activism in Melbourne, covering Ruth’s work with women and children in Brunswick during WWII, and Maurie’s work in the Clerk’s Union, and their work in urban planning. The collection has inspired artist Emily Floyd for her exhibition Emily Floyd: The Dawn at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2014-2015.
- Ray Verrills Collection with materials about Australian literature, left-wing politics and philosophy in Australia from the 1940s onwards. The latest addition to the collection consists of copies of letters, written by Realist writers Dorothy Hewett and Ray Verrills.
