Victoria University's Professor Football stable of Australian Rules experts kicks off a blog today in the run-up to the finals.
The first entry, from sports physiologist Dr Rob Aughey, showcases research that reveals finals footy is played at up to twice the intensity of the round of 22.
"My research reveals that players run harder and accelerate faster during finals. They really are lifting their game," Dr Aughey said.
Dr Aughey used GPS data to measure running and bursts of acceleration by players during the season and again during the finals.
"Finals play favours teams whose players are superbly fit. They need to match their opponents in intensity or they won't get through," he said.
