Leading sport experts to tackle integrity at forum

Victoria University and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame will host the second biennial Integrity in Sport Forum – at the Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne on Monday 9 May.

The forum will see a stellar panel of national and international experts - led by Kevan Gosper – focus on the global crisis and tackle issues of integrity and governance.

Bribery, corruption and cheating at the highest level of global sport - along with basic inefficiencies of many current sport administrations - have recently dominated news headlines.

How can it be solved? Where does the responsibility lie? What role do government, administrators, coaches and participants have in ensuring good governance at all levels of sport? How is it affecting sports participation at the grassroots level in Australia?

These questions and more will be explored by sporting leaders on the night.

The panel includes:

  • Jaimie Fuller, Australian entrepreneur and  global chairman of SKINS International
  • John Wylie, Australian Sports Commission chairman
  • Caro Meldrum-Hanna, ABC reporter whose 2015 investigation on greyhound racing industry led to an overhaul of the industry, prosecutions and life bans.

Professor Hans Westerbeek, Dean of the College of Sport and Exercise Science at Victoria University said the forum would take the debate beyond the superficial discussion of “something must be done”.

“It is designed to encourage a greater level of informed debate about integrity in sport issues, and encourage participants at all levels to reflect on actions they can take to address integrity issues,” Professor Westerbeek said.

A roadmap of guiding governance principles, structures and processes to ensure sport is re-defined to overcome 21st century challenges will also be discussed.

More than 200 sport and community leaders are expected to attend.  It follows the inaugural and highly successful Integrity in Sport Forum in 2014 which looked at ‘Winning at what price?’
