Do you know the difference between Footscray's African communities? Attend the first in a series of workshops held by African-Australian Multicultural Employment and Youth Services (AAMEYS) with the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

Come along to learn more about the diversity of local African communities in Melbourne's west and how to respectfully provide services. Providing respectful services requires you to understand the communities and their culture, family values, food, music and more.

This first workshop will be about the South Sudanese community, presented by South Sudanese leader Mr Ring Mayar and his team.

The workshop will start with a South Sudanese cultural meal and feature information on the following topics.

  • Learn how South Sudanese identify themselves within society by defining their historical background, displaying a map and location of their country, and a description of the culture and traditions. These traditions may include food, dress and music, art, sport, and religion, gender issues, family values, and getting married.
  • Recognise community unique identity and distinctiveness that separates Sudan within the Horn of African communities.
