Communities that care: Understanding the impacts of trauma on mental health
Victoria University invites staff from the university and our partner organisations to join us for a free seminar to explore the impact of trauma on mental health, and how communities can support young people who have been affected.
Mental health has a significant impact on an individual’s overall health and well being. During 2020–2021, just under 40% of young people aged 16–24 years had a diagnosed mental health condition of 12 months (ABS, 2022). However, an individual does not need a formal diagnosis to experience the negative impacts of mental ill health.
The community can play a significant role in providing safe environments for living and learning for all young people. We can connect young people to the right supports in order for individuals to lead purposeful and meaningful lives.
This seminar day will:
- provide participants with an understanding of trauma
- challenge some of the stigma associated with mental ill health
- examine the different impacts and intersections of mental health on the individual, family, study, work and community
- discuss practical strategies to support young people effectively.
The seminar day is for all VU staff, as well as external partners such as Wyndham Tech, Lifeline, Headspace and Aspect.
