VU Tax Clinic
VU Tax Clinic offers general services, including tax lodgement, advice and representation to unrepresented taxpayers who may be experiencing challenging circumstances.
Our services are aimed at supporting low-income earners, vulnerable individuals and those without access to professional tax assistance.
Services provided
We offer supervised and free services provided by VU’s TAFE and higher education students. This includes helping you:
- lodge a tax return
- lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS)
- navigate the general tax system and understanding tax obligations
- apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)
- complete Tax File Number Declaration forms (NAT 3093)
- set up a myGov account, including linking to government services such as Centrelink, ATO (Australian Tax Office) and Medicare
- understand Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding and instalments
- checking the accuracy of payslips including superannuation and PAYG withholding amounts
- register an Australian Business Number (ABN) or Goods and Service Tax (GST), if you're a small business client
- register a business name.

Our student practitioners
Our TAFE students and higher education students who will assist you under supervision are studying in these courses:
- FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping
- FNS50222 Diploma of Accounting
- Bachelor of Business (Accounting)
- Master of Professional Accounting.
The experience they gain in the Tax Clinic provides them with the opportunity to engage in case work directly relevant to their chosen career in accounting under the supervision of tax practitioners.
