Overview

Research Design and Proposal Development provides students with an opportunity to develop their investigative, analytical and critical skills in order to design a current research project (eg Year One Thesis in PhD (Integrated) or MRes thesis). This unit will support them to fully understand the nature and requirements of the research process and its components, and to establish a conceptually and structurally sound plan for the forthcoming research and for the Confirmation of Candidature process.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. identify and scope an academic research problem;
  2. critically analyse and evaluate relevant literature, including theory and its application, in order to situate their research within the literature, using high level cognitive and technical skills;
  3. design a substantial piece of scholarship to investigate a research problem, using appropriate methodology and methods
  4. present a coherent and sustained argument justifying choice of methods and methodologies using high level communication and technical skills and awareness of ethical issues; and
  5. demonstrate advanced skills of written and spoken academic communication.
