Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide specialised make-up services for productions in the film, television, photographic and live entertainment industries. It involves interpreting briefs, generating design ideas and providing specialised make-up services according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who are in senior roles and who apply make-up creatively, to enhance the ability of actors to portray characters, and conduct thorough background research to ensure characters are accurately represented. They work alone or on large-scale productions where they could be responsible for supervising others.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

design and apply specialised make-up according to at least two different production requirements.
In the course of the above, the candidate must:

*undertake research of specialised make-up applications and collaborate with others to inform development of specialised make-up designs
*develop and document specialised make-up designs and accompanying make-up plans that meet production and performer requirements
*generate different designs that provide creative solutions to specialised make-up
*apply and remove make-up using appropriate products and application techniques
*maintain appearance of performers’ make-up during productions
*complete work within production schedules
*comply with health and hygiene requirements when providing make-up services
*demonstrate refined and even make-up application
*establish any specific make-up requirements from performers and clearly explain procedures for applying and removing specialised make-up.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
*common production requirements for designing and applying specialised make-up including:
*schedules and timelines
*budgets
*actions required in the event of allergic or adverse reactions
*roles and responsibilities of personnel who need to be consulted in relation to designing specialised make-up
*typical problems with designing and applying specialised make-up and common solutions
*techniques for applying and removing specialised make-up
*health, hygiene and safety requirements that relate to applying and removing make-up
*effects of natural and artificial lighting on make-up and how make-up colours appear on the screen
*factors that impact design and application of specialised make-up
*specialised make-up applications including:

  • bald cap application
  • body painting
  • airbrushing
  • eyebrow blocking
  • appliance applications
  • highlight and shade for characterisation
  • latex work and aging
  • high definition eye designs
  • false eyelash applications
    *ways the use of colour design principles can enhance characterisation.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
