Overview

This unit specifies the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use basic hand tools for a range of simple plumbing tasks. This unit applies to plumbing pre-apprentices who under close supervision and guidance, develop a defined and limited range of skills and knowledge in preparing them for entering the working environment within the plumbing industry. They use little judgement and follow instructions specified by the supervisor. On entering the industry, it is intended that further training will be required for this specific skill to ensure trade level standard for a registered plumber.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • safely prepare, handle, use and store at least eight different hand tools appropriate for simple plumbing tasks.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • purpose and function of plumbing hand tools
  • terminology when using basic plumbing hand tools
  • techniques used for basic plumbing hand tools
  • workplace safety requirements and legislation, including personal protective equipment used when using basic plumbing hand tools
  • Australian standards, plumbing/building codes, legislation and regulations relevant to using basic plumbing hand tools
  • quality assurance requirements and procedures related to using basic plumbing hand tools
  • sustainability principles and requirements related to using basic plumbing hand tools.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
