Overview

This unit specifies the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to select, set up and use suitable basic levelling equipment for simple plumbing jobs. This unit applies to plumbing pre-apprentices who under close supervision and guidance, develop a defined and limited range of skills and knowledge in preparing them for entering the working environment within the plumbing industry. They use little judgement and follow instructions specified by the supervisor. On entering the industry, it is intended that further training will be required for this specific skill to ensure trade level standard for a registered plumber.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • Interpret information in documents, drawings, specifications and workplace procedures.
  • Take down simple notes during tasks.
  • Use questioning and listening to obtain information.
  • Use correct terminology when using levelling equipment.
  • Report any faults in levelling equipment.
  • Take measurements and make simple calculations.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • purpose and function of levelling equipment for plumbing tasks
  • terminology associated with levelling equipment
  • workplace safety requirements and legislation, including personal protective equipment used when using levelling equipment
  • types of levelling equipment and techniques to use them
  • purpose of gradients and measurements used
  • Australian standards, plumbing/building codes, legislation and regulations relevant to levelling tasks
  • quality assurance requirements and procedures related to levelling tasks
  • sustainability principles and requirements related to levelling tasks.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
