Overview

This unit specifies the performance evidence, skills and knowledge required to distinguish and determine opportunities and pathways of employment in the plumbing industry. This unit applies to plumbing pre-apprentices who under close supervision and guidance, develop a defined and limited range of skills and knowledge in preparing them for entering the working environment within the plumbing industry. They use little judgement and follow instructions specified by the supervisor. On entering the industry, it is intended that further training will be required for this specific skill to ensure trade level standard for a registered plumber.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • research information about plumbing history and developments from at least two different sources
  • explore and document at least three different plumbing career pathways based on identified preferences.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • sources of credible information on the plumbing industry
  • highlights in the history of plumbing and emerging trends
  • plumbing industry sectors and the types of jobs in each
  • sources of advice on career planning
  • internet research methods
  • methods and strategies to seek and identify employment opportunities
  • methods organise information chronologically and sequentially.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
