Overview

This unit specifies the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to make basic cuts and penetrations to building materials and structures for a range of simple plumbing jobs. This unit applies to plumbing pre-apprentices who under close supervision and guidance, develop a defined and limited range of skills and knowledge in preparing them for entering the working environment within the plumbing industry. They use little judgement and follow instructions specified by the supervisor. On entering the industry, it is intended that further training will be required for this specific skill to ensure trade level standard for a registered plumber.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • make safe cuts and penetrations to at least three different building materials and to at least two building structures in preparation for plumbing tasks.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • purpose of cutting and penetrating building materials and structures for plumbing tasks
  • types and properties of building materials
  • types and properties of building structures
  • terminology associated with cutting and penetrating building materials and structures for plumbing tasks
  • types of specifications and plans used for cutting and penetrating building materials and structures for plumbing tasks workplace safety requirements and legislation, including personal protective equipment used when cutting and penetrating building materials and structures
  • tools and equipment used for cutting and penetrating building materials and structures
  • methods of cutting and penetrating building materials and structures
  • Australian standards, plumbing/building codes, legislation and regulations relevant to cutting and penetrating building materials and structures for plumbing tasks
  • quality assurance requirements and procedures related to cutting and penetrating building materials and structures
  • sustainability principles and requirements related to cutting and penetrating building materials and structures.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
