Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes skills and knowledge required to develop safe work practices when using equipment and operating machinery in a technology teaching environment. It requires the ability to apply occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations, assess and control risks, identify hazards and respond to emergencies in accordance with Department of Education (DE) and school/college policy and guidelines. This unit applies to registered teachers and support technicians (non-teaching) using woodwork and/or metalwork machinery and equipment in a technology teaching environment. This unit is not intended to provide vocational competencies to operate metalwork machinery in a non-school environment.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • apply relevant OHS workplace procedures and practices to a technology teaching environment
  • apply hazard identification tools to identify and manage at least three (3) equipment/machinery-related hazards in a technology teaching environment
  • apply at least three (3) risk control measures when operating machinery in a technology teaching environment outline the procedures to be followed for dealing with a safety incident in own school’s technology teaching area.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
