Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to participate in the validation of assessment tools, practices and judgements, including in:
* pre-assessment validation of assessment tools before they are first used with candidates, and post-assessment validation of the tools after having been used to assess candidates
* post-assessment validation of practices and judgements.The unit applies to vocational education and training (VET) trainers and assessors with relevant industry experience to participate in validation activities according to organisational policies and procedures. Validation activities encompass the quality review of the assessment tools, practices and judgements. Participants in the validation do not lead the validation process.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • participate in the pre-assessment validation of at least 3 assessment tools before they are first used with candidates
  • participate in the validation of:
  • the above 3 assessment tools after they have been used to assess candidates
  • 3 assessment judgements by different assessors, where the same tool has been used for all 3 judgements
  • the practices undertaken in the course of the above assessment judgements, and identification of at least 2 recommendations for improvement.
    In the course of the above activities, the individual must:
  • use mapping documentation to evaluate whether the assessment tools cover all aspects of the 3 nationally recognised units of competency and their assessment requirements
  • review samples of evidence collected for at least 1 full unit of competency
  • use effective oral and written communication skills when discussing and collaborating with colleagues.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-Learning system.
